If you’re someone who seeks out unforgettable food wherever you go, you’ll love Hunter’s French story — inspired by a legendary sandwich in the 2nd arrondissement.
After reading about Le Petit Vendôme, he made it his mission to try one of their specialties. What stayed with him wasn’t the complexity, but how three simple ingredients left a lasting impression.
As part of his homework, Hunter wrote a vignette in French. Enjoy it — it’s too delicious to miss.
Wherever I am, I make it a point of seeking unique food experiences.
I had read about a restaurant in the 2nd arrondissement, Le Petit Vendôme that does a brisk business serving hearty fare, and this sandwich is one of their specialties.
As I described below, I wanted to convey how just 3 ingredients made an everlasting impression.
I start with an outline of key points I want to communicate.
I then write the entire vignette in English.
The “leçons”, live sessions with Llyane and other tools i.e. podcast, stories and French TV shows provide guidance for sentence construction, French-style: verb, noun, gender: always gender!
I build each sentence around these elements, and complete with adverbs, pronouns, adjectives as needed.
Word-for-word translation doesn’t work.
What makes French “français” are the nuances, and for these, nothing is more valuable than seeing, reading, hearing and practicing “en français”.

Le meilleur sandwich que j’ai jamais mangé (à Paris)
La dernière fois que nous avons visité Paris, nous avons mangé finalement le fameux sandwich jambon-beurre.
Si simple, mais si bon !
Il n’y a que trois ingrédients – et du fromage et/ou des cornichons si tu aimes: du jambon français, du beurre riche, une baguette croustillante.
Peut-être parce que c’est Paris, c’était l’un des meilleurs sandwichs que j’ai jamais mangé.
J’ai essayé de recréer le sandwich à la maison, avec du jambon, du beurre français et une baguette depuis Whole Foods.
Mais, ce n’était pas pareil.
Une de mes expressions préférées est « les Hot Dogs ont toujours au meilleur goût au stade de baseball ».
Tout à fait vrai !
