The three types of French teachers
There is a multitude of people offering to help you learn French, and I’d like to help you find the right one for you.
Nothing is more disappointing than to commit to a person, get attached or used to them, and then having to interrupt the lessons because their method doesn’t work for you.
But, to avoid this, you need to know what you’re looking for. And the difference is not in the level of French they know.
French tutor
This is a person who is used to help children/students to do their homework.
They patch the problem, fix the issue for short term (test, exam, etc.) You ask them questions, and they give you a practical, concrete answer, that can be applied right away.
They will correct your errors, so you have an error-free homework.
You tell them what they want, and they fulfill the job at hand: pass an exam, write an essay.
French teacher
This is a person who loves theory, grammar, literature.
They’re also used to explain, lecture, talk.
They’ll go in depth, explain why something is said in a certain way, by resorting to grammar, etymology, history and literature.
They have a method, you sit back and they hold your hand through the journey.
French coach
This is a person who adjusts their methods to the way you perform best and fastest.
They use tutors’ methods and go to the teachers’ depths in such ways that help you find your personal, specific way to speak French.
While you learn French, they learn the way your brain works. They find the patters that no longer serve you, and help you ditch them.
Meanwhile, they create new ways that work for you and only you. This way, you can speak the language, and not get stuck in the theory and learning.
They are your coach, giving you the results you need with the methods that they discover that work best for you.
