1. Philosophy of Teaching Statement
Llyane B Stanfield – French Conversation Coach
J-Ouellette® Method
As a French conversation coach, my teaching philosophy focuses on empowering students to achieve confidence and fluid conversations in French through the J’Ouellette Method®. Enriched by my acting background, this method emphasizes mastering pronunciation, engaging in immersive conversations, and practical real-world application. The J’Ouellette Method® incorporates unique pronunciation rules and the Performing Arts Approach® to foster confidence from day one, regardless of proficiency level. My ultimate goal is for students to gain both knowledge and the confidence to use French effectively in real-world scenarios, transforming their learning experience into one of cultural literacy, creativity, and global citizenship.
As a French conversation coach, my teaching philosophy revolves around empowering students to achieve confidence and fluidity in their French conversations through the proprietary J’Ouellette Method®. This method, enriched by my background in acting, focuses on mastering pronunciation, engaging in conversations with natives, and practicing in immersive settings. My ultimate goal is for students to gain not only linguistic knowledge but also the confidence to use French effectively in real-world scenarios.
Goals as a Language Coach
My primary goal is to transform students into confident and proficient French speakers. This encompasses not only linguistic accuracy but also self-assurance in conversations. By using the Performing Arts Approach®, I foster an environment where students engage in interactive activities and continuous conversational practice. My approach emphasizes self-expression and practical application, redefining proficiency to include ease in real-life interactions.
Promoting Student Engagement and Inclusion
The J’Ouellette Method® is built on three pillars designed to maximize student engagement and create an inclusive learning environment:
- Art of Confident Conversations Methodology®: This pillar focuses on building confidence and practical application. By integrating kinesthetic learning techniques like strategic questioning and self-correction, students internalize pronunciation rules and sentence structure. The Performing Arts Approach® encourages students to engage from day one, regardless of proficiency level.
- Total Immersion Experience 2.0®: This pillar enhances engagement through 1-on-1 guided conversations, micro-group sessions, and partner interactions, offering a comprehensive, real-life learning experience. The Flipped Classroom Model allows students to learn new material independently, fostering interactive class discussions and continuous conversational practice. Cultural immersion deepens students’ connection to the language, enhancing authenticity in communication.
- French Connection Framework®: Drawing from my personal experiences of navigating various accents, I developed techniques such as The Godfather Effect, Ear Gymnastics, Deep Practice, and Sense Memory. These methods make learning French organic and enjoyable, helping students to train their ears and refine their pronunciation much like muscles in a gym.
Overcoming Obstacles
One common obstacle students face is the fear of making mistakes. To address this, I create a supportive environment where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for growth. Encouraging students to speak from day one helps them build confidence and manage conversation anxiety. For example, my student Troy Teague, who had no prior exposure to French, transformed from a complete novice to confidently engaging in conversations with native speakers within 12 months.
Growing as a Language Coach
Continuous growth and innovation are central to my teaching philosophy. I am committed to ongoing research and professional development, currently working on my Leaders of Learning Certification at HarvardX to refine and expand my methods. By integrating feedback from students and staying abreast of the latest developments in language teaching, I ensure that my approach remains effective and relevant.
Conclusion
As a French conversation coach, I am dedicated to empowering students through the J’Ouellette Method®. By prioritizing confidence and fluid conversations, I cultivate an environment where students develop critical thinking, creativity, cultural literacy, and empathy. My teaching philosophy emphasizes cultural immersion and authentic self-expression, ensuring students gain not only language skills but also become confident, thoughtful, and engaged global citizens.

3. Active Learning Technique
Bridging Theory and Practice: Using Problem-Based Learning to Explore Reflexive Verb Conjugation in French
The Problem-Based Learning (PBL) technique described below seamlessly aligns with my teaching philosophy. This method places a premium on confidence and practical application in French conversation, integrating immersive experiences and continuous practice. By involving students in problem-solving tasks, PBL encourages active engagement, critical thinking, and the practical application of language skills, mirroring the real-world scenarios emphasized in my teaching approach. Through this technique, students not only deepen their understanding of reflexive verb conjugation in French but also hone problem-solving abilities essential for effective language use. Consequently, PBL embodies the essence of the French Connection Framework® and enhances students’ confidence and proficiency in French conversation.
Introduction:
Active learning techniques play a crucial role in connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. In this submission, we will explore how problem-based learning (PBL) can be utilized to engage students in the topic of reflexive verb conjugation in French while fostering connections to real-life scenarios. By aligning learning objectives with meaningful tasks, students can deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge in practical contexts.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the difference between reflexive verbs in French and English.
2. Understand the usage of reflexive pronouns in French.
3. Apply reflexive verb conjugation in practical, real-world situations.

I am not a creative person, and the thought of writing something in French each week is very difficult for me.
However, Llyane mentioned that I should write about something that I am interested in. That simple suggestion was the lightbulb that I needed, even though she had mentioned this before!
Someday I would like to travel to France, but honestly, I have no idea where I want to go, only that I want to experience more than Paris. This marked the beginning of my research into France, all of the marvelous places to visit, and this first of hopefully many writing exercises.
I originally wrote this piece in English as that was an easier way to express my thoughts in the way that I wanted. I then translated from English to French, which sometimes required me to restructure my sentences and thoughts, because my French writing skills are not as advanced as my English writing skills.
The process of translation was very eye-opening to me, as it showed me that I can communicate in French, even at a lower level. I anticipate that this will help with my spoken French as well.
In the end, I felt a sense of accomplishment as I researched a topic that I am interested in, wrote about it in English, and translated it into French. Of course I made mistakes, but I welcome mistakes as they help me grow in my learning of the French language.

France: My Written Journey
In January 2023, Llyane encouraged me to develop my French writing skills.
At the time, this seemed like an impossible request. You see, I have a hard time coming up with ideas to write or talk about in English. Figuring out what to write about AND THEN translate that into French made my head spin. However, I am not one to back down from a challenge. So, I embarked on a journey that has elicited emotions such as dread, fear, and frustration but has ultimately resulted in joy, satisfaction, and pride.
Here is my journey.
After many days of contemplation, I decided to write about the different places in France that I may someday like to visit. This seemed accessible to me and would also be beneficial later.
Llyane and I decided on a schedule that included submitting an article every three weeks. I won’t lie. I had no idea how I was going to do this. At the end, there are a total of eighteen articles, and my process has evolved over the course.
The first article – the introduction to the series – was one of the hardest. I had no idea how much research I needed to do, how to translate my written English into written French, or how many pages was adequate.
So, I closed my eyes and jumped in with both feet.
The Research
Initially, I began research for my articles the week before I submitted them to Llyane. However, I quickly realized that I needed to begin research as soon as the last one was finished which gave me three weeks from start to finish.
Since my research would determine where I wanted to visit, some articles took longer than others to research as it was easy to go down various rabbit holes!
Once I settled into a loose format for the articles, it was easier to keep the research on point.
The first few articles were three handwritten pages double spaced. By the end, the articles were six handwritten pages double spaced. I’m grateful Llyane learned to read my handwriting!
Translating the Research
When I first finished the research, I didn’t know what to do with it. So, I began each article by writing it in English. This was the easy part as I was able to use the full extent of my native language.
The hard part came next – translating into French.
The objective of this writing expedition was to learn the French language. I eventually developed my own method. I would take each English sentence that I had written from my research and simplify it into a sentence that I knew that I could construct in French. This meant one sentence became two a lot of times.
Llyane always encourages me to pretend like I was talking to my son when he was four or five. This reminder helped me simplify the sentences without feeling like I was losing the context and feel that I wanted. Once I had settled on a simplified sentence, I would write it in French.
This process included looking up words that I didn’t know or colloquial phrases in Reverso. My final step was to use Reverso in reverse. I’d type in the French sentence I had written to see how it was translated into English. This would allow me to understand where my mistakes were and to make tweaks, if needed.
The Final Product
After translating the article into French, I’d put it away for a while. A few days before I submitted the article to Llyane, I’d look over it one last time to check word agreement – subject-verb and adjective.
I would also read over it out loud to myself right before my next session with Llyane. When Llyane and I would meet, I would read the article to her, and she would provide pronunciation correction and suggestions for better ways to word some of the sentences so that they portrayed what I was trying to get across.
The final step was providing Llyane with a brief introduction in English and a typed version of the article in French.
I hope you enjoy the articles on the amazing country of France. They are truly a labor of love.

9. Peer Review
The peer review exemplifies my teaching philosophy by highlighting my dedication to student confidence and practical application in French conversation. It underscores my commitment to personalized guidance, innovative techniques, and immersive experiences, core principles of the J’Ouellette Method®. This reflection aligns with my focus on fostering self-assurance and real-world proficiency in language learning.
Llyane is fully dedicated to supporting her students to reach their goals and confidently speak French. I’ve watched her pour countless hours into her curriculum and her support process to fully ensure that her students are fully equipped with the necessary training and hands on support to drive success.
One of the most unique aspects of her work is how she identified the role French language played in non-native speakers. She quickly realized that the pattern between learning the language and her students was the innate desire to create confidence. Whether that was in the culture that was passed down to them, to the relationships they wanted to create, or the sheer ability to reinvent themselves, she understood that confidence was ultimately what they were after. From that she was able to leverage her performing arts background to help people “own the stage” of speaking French.
This concept alone trickles into all other aspects of their lives. Allowing her not only to share the gift of performing arts and creating confidence within themselves, but to speak French with their heads held high, while defying the typical years of practice to achieve that.
This, combined with her unique 1:1 teaching style, her innovative approach and her zest for the language has created a complete shift in her students and how language can be shared as a tool to instill confidence and empower students to take charge of the life they want.

“I am extremely happy with the progress that I have made and continue to make”
I have been studying with Llyane for about a year and a half, and I have never regretted the decision.
Before I found Llyane and her French coaching methods, I had attempted to learn the French language several times through various means such as high school courses, college courses, adult education classes, classes taught through French associations, and self-learning apps. Each time I became more and more discouraged, and I began to believe that I would never be able to not only learn but speak the French language.
There had to be something out there that would work for me.
Out of desperation and frustration late one night, I found Llyane’s website. I decided to give it one last try and filled out the contact form. I am extremely grateful that I did. Llyane is an amazing teacher, mentor, and coach who puts you at ease from the very beginning.
I especially like her Pronunciation Cure course which has helped me become more confident speaking French because I know the rules of pronunciation. I also appreciate her patience, gentle prodding, and encouragement every time we meet.
Llyane’s method is completely different than what I had been used to, but it works!
Initially, she took the time to really know my strengths and weaknesses, to figure out how I learn best, and most of all, to understand my goals. Because of this, she has modified her method to take advantage of my learning style. For instance, I am very analytical and like to understand the mechanics of grammar. Llyane breaks the French language down so that I understand it.
I have progressed farther than I have before, even with years of learning, and it’s because of Llyane and her method.
I also really enjoy the group conversation sessions. While meeting with Llyane once a week for a lesson is wonderful and where I am able to ask all of my in-depth questions, the group lessons build upon what I have learned and the progress that I am making. They encourage active listening since everyone speaks differently and inspires impromptu conversation with those at a similar level which aids in reaching for vocabulary and sentence structure. As a shy, introverted person, this safe place to make mistakes is truly wonderful.
Because of Llyane and her method, I am more confident in speaking French, and I am extremely happy with the progress that I have made and continue to make. I wish that I had found her earlier.
If you are hesitant, I’d urge you to give it a chance. I may just change your life!

Dear Reader,
Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio.
After finishing the Harvard Higher Education Teaching Certificate course, where I’ve learned about new cutting-edge approaches to learning and teaching based on sound research, I immersed myself in the Leaders of Learning Certificate course, offered by the same school, to further my understanding of how neuroscience will affect the future of learning and enhance my ability to guide students and educators alike. By deepening my knowledge of leadership principles and innovative teaching methodologies, I aim to elevate my teaching practice and make a broader impact in the field of education.
Learning to speak French enriches lives in myriad ways. Professionals can broaden their business horizons with Francophone clients, families can travel seamlessly, and students can engage deeply with diverse cultures. This engagement cultivates a profound connection to French society, fostering global citizenship and a natural openness to other languages and cultures.
In my French conversation practice, the focus of my Method is on building confidence. Rather than rote memorization, emphasis is placed on recognizing pronunciation patterns, contextual understanding, and individualized learning paths. This approach enables students to identify triggers for fluency, track progress, and navigate translation challenges, ensuring lifelong language use for self-expression and intercultural communication.
Students also delve into French culture, dissecting expressions to uncover underlying values and nuances often lost in translation. Understanding these subtleties fosters deeper connections to the language and its speakers.
My ultimate goal is for students to not only retain vocabulary and grammar but also to adapt and understand the cultural nuances of French through consistent conversation practice, regardless of their proficiency level. This empowers them to craft their own linguistic identities for years to come.
My mission is to empower my students to have the confidence needed to achieve this and any other aspirations they have in life.
Thank you once again for your time and consideration,
Llyane B Stanfield
