Pronunciation Rules - J'Ouellette® Method

HOW TO PRONOUNCE FRENCH CONFIDENTLY IN JUST 4 DAYS (INCLUDING WORDS YOU AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH!)

I specialize in helping traveling professionals confidently express themselves by mastering the art of French conversation using the innovative J’Ouellette Method.

I created my Method (which is different from what you’ve tried before) because most courses, applications, and school programs focus on vocabulary and grammar.

And while these are absolutely necessary, there’s no way we can speak fluently, without conversation training and pronunciation rules.

Knowing pronunciation in French is essential because it ensures that you’re clearly understood by native speakers, avoiding potential misunderstandings.

Additionally,
accurate pronunciation builds your confidence, helps you blend in, allowing you to engage more naturally in conversations.

Curious about what people think of French pronunciation, I asked on Facebook and LinkedIn how many rules exist: 5, 10-20, or more than 40.

Responses varied, with some including exceptions, but many believed there are no rules at all and that we should just imitate the French.

But here is the way to think about it: a regular adult conversation uses between 3,000 – 10,000 words.

This means that we would have to hear these words, imitate them, and then remember their pronunciation based on what they mean.

Imagine trying to master the pronunciation of 5,000 words, one at a time.

In a typical adult conversation, that’s the number of words you’d need to know.

You’d have to hear each word, imitate it, and memorize its pronunciation along with its meaning.

This task would consume a lifetime,
requiring your full focus—leaving no room for work, school, or anything else.

The enormity of this challenge shows just how impractical it is to rely solely on imitation for mastering pronunciation.

I’ve taught people who were PhDs in French and teachers of the French language at high school and they’re still learning the pronunciation 10 years later.

That goes to show you that the typical approach leaves you a life-long learner.

However,
contrary to popular belief, the opinion that there’s only one rule—“listen to how French people speak and imitate them” — is not accurate.

There’s an easier way that doesn’t require you to spend years or a lifetime trying to get there and actually have you start pronouncing words you’ve never heard before in just 4 days.

And I hope it brings you a sigh of relief when you read it. 🙂

Pronunciation in French is different from English.

With just over 50 pronunciation rules in French, once you’re familiar with them, you can confidently read words you’ve never seen or heard before.

So you see them, observe the patterns, and this helps in pronouncing words you’ve never encountered before—even if you’re unsure of their meaning, such as those found on a restaurant menu, for instance.

And I’m not talking about studying phonetics.

It’s about practicing those 50 sounds.

Learning French pronunciation and conversation, not vocabulary and grammar, is a performing art that’s highly physical.

It has much more in common with music and acting than with memorizing rules.

It’s a combination of pronunciation and ear training.

Picture learning French pronunciation as learning to play a song by heart.

Rather than focusing on individual notes or following sheet music, you listen closely to the melody and rhythm, letting them guide your fingers on the keys.

In the same way, mastering French sounds is about absorbing the language’s natural flow and rhythm.

You don’t just memorize where to place your tongue or how to form each sound; you internalize the sensations and the way the words feel in your mouth, much like how an actor embodies a character’s voice and presence.

This approach helps you speak French more naturally, capturing its essence rather than just following a set of rules.

This approach helps my clients not only rely on their ears but also develop muscle memory.

My clients do not require me to repeatedly produce the sounds for them.

Once they internalize them through ear training and sense memory, they become self-sufficient as I guide them toward self-correction.

Although I’m there every step of the way,
our process makes it so that my clients don’t need to hear me pronounce the words at all in order for them to be able to pronounce correctly.

It’s not about imitating or depending on the native’s assistance or understanding.

It’s about clarity and precise expression, avoiding confusion.

For example, the words « sur » which means “on” and « sous » which means “under”.

The reason I chose these two words is because both « u » and « ou » are foreign sounds to English speakers, especially Americans.

And they must be acquired by using ear training.

Use the wrong word, and you will tell a very different story.

This brings clarity and confidence when you speak.

The way we talk has everything to do with our self-image.

And my clients are all about expressing themselves with grace and finesse.

Are you excited to practice only 50 rules of pronunciation and be able to say and hear words you don’t even know yet, instead of learning 5,000 words, one by one?
