THIS IS HOW LEARNING KEEPS YOU FROM FRENCH CONVERSATION
So, do you need help with your French conversation?
Is it surprising to you that learning the language may prevent you from speaking the language?
Is that even possible?
There are many things that don’t make logical sense, yet us, humans, need to know a little more about how our brain works, to properly use it and use it at its max.
Even people who have a large vocabulary and know grammar well, yet they didn’t quite have the opportunity to speak the language, the more they wait, the more their confidence shrinks.
There is a very interesting thing happening for most: no matter how much they wish to speak, they stop trying.
Luckily there is a solution.
Read the article below to discover the 3 simple steps you can take to avoid this block, and watch the video for some French worth trying.
(This week: verb ESSAYER – to try)
Step #1: Start by learning just some basics
Learning vocabulary and grammar is necessary. What is a language without them? However, don’t make this activity your favorite pass time. Don’t reward yourself for learning 100 words/day or even 1 verb/day. While this may seem a great thing to do, an addition to your repository of words, at the end of the day it may have the opposite effect.
If you think that knowing more words will give you the confidence to speak, think again. The confidence that you will gain is in “knowing” the words, not in “speaking” those words.
Step #2: Start making conversation right from the start
It is a thought that proves to be a little scary to most people. But the only thing that you don’t like is the fact that you may sound like a 3-year old.
My advice: make peace with it!
We’ve all been there – I’m learning 3 languages right now, I’m right there with you – and the good news is that you don’t have to survive using French. Imagine how much more stressful would be if you had to use it for work or to live in France.
But then, you may not have a choice, and you may be braver to try your words in conversation. 😉
Step #3: Incorporate the new vocabulary as you go
Keep making conversation using what you know.
And keep learning new words and grammar.
Then, make sure you keep including in your conversation the new words and grammar.
Enrich your vocabulary by reading, watching TV, listening to the radio – but you see… ONLY using this strategy will this help you actually have a more active vocabulary.
