THIS IS HOW DAVID BOWIE WAS SINGING IN FRENCH (A TRIBUTE)

David Bowie (born David Jones in 1947) was for me, and many millions of people, a non-disputed presence. He was someone who’s always there, a source of wonder and surprise.

Some say that he was the white Michael Jackson, if we are to compare him – though his art and talent are unique, baring no comparison or limits.

To hear the news that he is no longer going to reinvent himself, and to bring us the new colors of his music (literally and metaphorically) is hard. It’s difficult to comprehend, and upsetting for many.

For me, this is one of those news that take long time to sink in, and the ripples get bigger and bigger… I thought he’d be here forever.

Why do we react this way when a celebrity disappears?

I don’t think that we should be star struck or we should educate our children to be.

Just being famous doesn’t mean anything, it is not about the number of fans. Although the fans of all celebrities have found something inspiring, that changed their life, that gives a meaning or purpose.

David Bowie was not just any celebrity, he gave us undisputed talent, showed us that we can (and we should) change and reinvent ourselves. He inspired us with his music and spirit. Many refer to him as “The chameleon of rock”, after he created characters like Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, the Thin White Duke, Tao Jones, Halloween Jack, and John Merrick.

That’s what created the void once he disappeared on January 10th, 2 days after he released his last album, Blackstar, and his 69th birthday. Chain smoking and cocaine abuse led to six heart attacks and an incurable liver cancer that took him away from us.

He touched the French with his hit « Héros », released in 1977:

…and then, with his concert live at Olympia, in 2002:

His many appearances in Paris, made him very loved in France. The last event was the exhibition at the Philharmonie de Paris, in 2015.

David Bowie - Paris

“David Bowie was truly a Renaissance man and visionary artist with extraordinary talent as a singer, songwriter, performer, actor and producer, and was a musical hero to millions. A GRAMMY Award Winner and a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, he is remembered and celebrated today for his audacious approach to pushing creative boundaries and ability to reinvent himself time and time again, changing the course of pop music in the process. David was a true original who influenced so many and his art will live on forever. We offer our sincere condolences to his family, friends, creative collaborators and to all of David’s fans across the globe.”
~ Neil Portnow, President/CEO, The Recording Academy

While everyone grieves the loss of David Bowie, I find myself somehow comforted that his music, talent and presence is always here, even if there will be no more new material, no new surprises.
I’m happy to bask in appreciation of the gift he has been to the world. That will never be lost.
    My favourite Bowie song?
    It has to be Heroes.

I didn’t appreciate David Bowie’s music to much later in life. But now I realise how extraordinary and visionary he was. Hands down my fave Bowie song is Starman.
