What is the French & Wellness Immersion Weekend

This is an incredibly unique weekend experience that combines the talents of international French Language Coach Llyane Stanfield and Integrative Herbalist and Nutrition Coach Jovanka Ciares in an immersive New Orleans experience in the Spring of 2019.

Jovanka and Llyane have designed a VIP weekend in New Orleans with the adventurer and wellness seeker at heart.

The VIP Immersion Retreats are held in New Orleans, New York City and Paris. They are custom designed based on the students’ preferences, and no two retreats are alike. Please scroll down to see how two other VIP immersion retreats felt like.

Catherine describing her “NY in French” immersion:

“I went on my first immersion with Llyane. I was a little nervous because I am a beginner in French and didn’t know how I was going to manage speaking in French for a weekend!

Llyane asked to choose what I would like to do and from there she ensured that French would be included, whether during the event itself, or with French conversation during and afterwards.

Listening to a French audio guide was challenging, but Llyane was very helpful in breaking down the audio commentary into segments and explaining what was being said in French.

We spent much time walking around the city, on the streets as well as in nature, and we would talk in French about things we saw or passed by, which made the conversation flow.

I thoroughly enjoyed the French restaurants and cafés Llyane picked out as well, where we could relax and begin and end our day of adventure with French conversation. Llyane was very patient and kind and understanding, and understood when my brain needed to rest !

I would recommend the immersion programs to anyone who wants to experience having an adventure in French in a unique setting with a very personable and engaging coach: Llyane!”

Troy about his “An American in Paris” immersion:

“I just want to talk a little bit about the wonderful week that I’ve had with Llyane in Paris, the culture that I’ve been exposed to. Obviously I’ve came here to be immersed in the language, but this was more than the language, it was the culture, it was the life of Parisians. I know for sure that I would not have had this experience without Llyane and we also met a very good new friend named René-Gustave who’s also very charming and took an exceptional trip and made it even a little bit better. We had just an amazing time.

I would say to anyone who’s considering coming with Llyane in Paris that if you have some doubts, that’s natural, I’ve had my own doubts but what I’ve learned, what I’ve taken away from this is that I know the language better than I thought I did, and knowing the language made this trip to Paris, which I’ve had many in the past, much richer, and its a very good experience not only interacting with the citizens in Paris, ordering food, talking to the great people of Paris in the street but going to Louvre and the cooking class we did it’s just a richer experience. There’s no way to describe it.

The best way to know what I’m talking about is to come here yourself … so we’ve had, like I said, we’ve had an amazing time, so definitely I’ll be coming back to Paris, and if she’ll have me, I’ll come back to Paris with Llyane as well. It inspired me to study the language even more, probably more intensively because now I see that it’s within reach and I would say that almost every doubt I’ve had about learning French dissolves, and I’ve certainly fallen in love with Paris and its people.”

    FRENCH

What is the level of French that I need to have to be able to join the Immersion?
    – Being a 1-on-1 immersion, you can come at any level – the idea is to take French from the ‘class’ environment to the ‘real life’ environment. If you want to be more prepared, you can register now, and take the Intensive program or just a few classes with Llyane before the trip.

    2. How much 1-on-1 time with Llyane will I have?
    – Having 1-on-1 French time, you will have 1-on-1 attention every day during the entire trip. The ‘French only’ time will vary, since our immersion includes activities and lesson in both English and French. But you will spend various hours each day talking and listening to the conversations around. If you need more ‘class time’, you can have 1 additional hour of 1-on-1 coaching (sold separately).

    3. Is there time for a relative newbie to learn enough French to join the immersion trip?
    – It’s a 1-on-1 VIP immersion, so we can accommodate a newbie too. The sooner you register, the better. Of course, knowing that you aim to come to the Immersion, we will focus on conversation a little more than usual.

    4. How much French would you expect to learn from this retreat? How fluent will you become?
    – You will speak up to 5 hours/day… but don’t worry, Llyane will be there to help. To become fluent it takes quite some time, but the experience of the immersion helps you better create your own correct phrases and improve your pronunciation; only when put in the situation to manage your own conversation will you be able to best use the knowledge from the class. Shifting from the ‘class’ to the ‘street’ mindset, will give you a huge confidence boost and you’ll be able to use much more of what you already know in theory.

    5. What does the language preparation entail?
    – Depending on your level, you can have a number of classes with Llyane, to prepare you for the immersion environment. You’ll have an assessment session and will decide together what is the plan of action. You and Llyane should work together before, so that Llyane can know you well, and be able to help you the best possible way while you are on the trip. This will also help you to get comfortable with Llyane, and enjoy the weekend you’ll spend together in New Orleans.

    WELLNESS

    1. What kind of wellness activities should we expect?
    – We are planning a unique set of activities including outdoor yoga (weather permitting), healthy cooking class, herbal medicine workshop and more.

    2. Will I need to be on a special diet to be part of this weekend?
    – No! While Coach Jovanka will be teaching you healthier ways to eat and live and we will be eating healthy foods all weekend, you’ll also get a chance to try a few treats and enjoy yourself during your weekend in New Orleans.

    3. What does an herbalist do?
    – A certified herbalist specializes in utilizing the healing properties of plants. Herbalists grow and manufacture remedies (infusions, teas, salves, tinctures and more) to be used for medical purposes and act as consultants for patients seeking a more homeopathic treatment plan. Coach Jovanka is also versed in Ayurveda and integrative nutrition, incorporating all three practices in her sessions and workshops.

    4. What is the a 1-on-1 coaching session with Coach Jovanka like?
    – During your 1-on-1 coaching session with Jovanka you will complete a full health assessment, and an Ayurvedic dosha (body constitution) test. Jovanka will then will offer nutritional/dietary options based on your specific needs and will build an herbal protocol (teas, tinctures, supplements) to follow for 4-6 weeks.

    5. What if I don’t know wellness terms in French?
    – No worries! Coach Llyane will be there to translate during workshops yoga classes and dinners and help you encourage you to engage in conversation with your new vocabulary in French. So you’ll get to learn the terms in English and use them in French all on the same day!

    LOGISTICS

    1. Are there activities included in the price?
    – Yes. There is a mix of activities (included in the price). For example, we’ve arranged a yoga class, a creole healthy cooking class and a unique city tour. You will also have ample time to explore the city on your own.

    2. What locales will we visit and what activities will there be on this trip?
    – The VIP immersive will have us all over New Orleans so that you can get acquainted with the beautiful city. From the French Quarter to the Garden District, you’ll come away with knowledge about well-known and “off the beaten path” sections of the city.

    3. Will we have some free time to explore France and practice our new skills?
    – There is a mix of activities with your Language Coach and your Wellness Coach and time to explore New Orleans on your own – you can also come with your friend or significant other, to spend time with them outside of the immersion or inside – this way you will really immerse yourself and see where your French skills really are. This will not affect the price.

    4. Can I get help with my travel arrangements?
    – We can offer some assistance and suggestions and can help book travel or arrange for a longer stay for an additional fee. Contact us here if you need specific help.

    5. What hotels do you recommend?
We recommend the following hotels near or on the French Quarter: Le Pavillion, The Roosevelt, Hôtel de la Monnaie

    6. If I come with my friend or significant other, can s/he participate?
    – Absolutely. There’s plenty of free time that you can have together and s/he’s welcome to participate in the activities for an extra fee. S/he can also do individual sessions with Coach Llyane and/or Coach Jovanka.

    7. Is it okay to invite a friend, relative, or significant other that has no experience with the language?
    – Absolutely! Friends, relatives and significant others are welcome and a great way to share the cost of the trip!

    8. What if I can’t pay the whole thing today?
    – There is also an option for 2 payments, and the registrations open a few weeks in advance.

      Hello, Llyane
How much time do I have to prepare my French in order to qualify for this immersion?

      And Jovanka,
What will I learn in this immersion for my health?

      Thanks so much!

Hi, Andrea, thank you for your great questions!
You don’t need to prepare in advance for your French.
We will have a complimentary conversation together so that I can identify your level, and I’ll meet you where you feel comfortable.
If, however, you would like to improve your level a little, you are welcome to have a few sessions with me before the trip.
(Jovanka will answer her question soon)

        Hi Andrea:

        You will learn:
        – about your dosha (the energy that governs your physical/mental constitution based on Ayurveda ) as part of your one-on-one session
        – how to balance your constitution with herbal remedies and wellness practices
        – how to use food and herbs as natural cures to treat your most pressing health concern
        – how to enjoy a night out and extra yummy food without undoing your routine

        Hope this helps!

I’m excited about the wellness part – where can I see some of Jovanka’s materials?

This trip is meant to be fun, Dina, and I appreciate that you’re sharing your feelings here.
We’ll make it as much fun as you want it to be.
That’s why I meet with you before the trip in the form of a complimentary session, so that you can share with me what your level of French is and what you’d like to experiment with.
If you don’t feel comfortable to speak French more extensively, we can only have the 1:1 sessions together. During the trip, I’ll share my time with every participant in 1:1 sessions, so that you won’t be embarrassed about your level.
The environment is non-judgmental, everybody has a different level of their knowledge, and we encourage everybody to aim for progress, not perfection 😉

I’m a super beginner in French, and I’d love to make some progress.
New Orleans seems the perfect place to go for that, I think.
Thank you for putting this together!
I wonder if we will have a class setting during the trip, or we will converse casually?
Same for the health and wellness .
      Thank you!

        Bonjour, John !
Thank you for your great questions.
We won’t have classes, we like to do thinks in a casual format.
The group is very intimate (maximum 6), so everybody will have ample time with me to try and play with the conversation in French.

I’ll let Jovanka answer her side of the question 🙂

      Hi John:

We will have a small, intimate group (6 people max) so there won’t be a need for a class setting for the health and wellness. However, we will meet as a group to learn about food, will discuss wellness practices and herbal remedies during our dinners and individually with me to learn about your constitution and specific health concerns. You’ll get a full protocol that’s specific to you and your needs/goals. Hope this helps!

I’ve no issues with the French side, I know Llyane and I trust she’s going to make this experience stellar – I’ve been on a similar immersion in New York City, amazing!
AND I’m a beginner. I had no idea I could do an immersion!!
This is a group immersion, and I’m excited to know other people who are interested in the same things I am.
Kudos for the initiative, I wouldn’t expect any less from you.
I’m curious if I have to prepare anything in advance for the health and wellness: do I have to do Yoga if I’m not a yoga person, will we split the group? What’s the idea?
      Thanks again!

        Hi Daniel:

Yes, Llyane is incredible and I’m also honored and excited for the opportunity to work together.

So glad you’re a beginner, you’ll get a ton of great insights and knowledge. No, you won’t need to prepare anything or know yoga at all. I think I mentioned it above but just to confirm, the activities for our trip will be highly customizable to make sure our group is getting exactly what they want.

Also, here’s our preliminary itinerary for Saturday:

Bonjour, Donna, this is also a brilliant question!
I work with everybody at their level.
Meaning, with you, I can chat a bit in our group sessions, while I’ll give your daughter the words she needs to understand more of what we’re doing.
Don’t forget, this is for FUN! 🙂
You can explain to her the words too, and I can mediate the conversation between the two of you in such a way that you’ll leave the trip feeling that you’ve had your first conversation in French with her 😉

Jovanka may jump in to tell us if she has anything to add.
