Here are a few strategies to keep in mind:
Strategies that keep you stuck:
1. Going in a group immersion in the hopes that the ‘sink or swim’ theory works.
This strategy may work for some, but most of us need some worming-up to do before this leap.
Doing this could easily become an expensive and time consuming lesson.
2. Listening to everything you can, in the hopes that you’ll learn how to learn quicker.
This strategy will keep you stuck because you’ll be able to hear better, yes, but not in conversation.
In conversation, we need another type of listening (functional, or active) which is a completely different skill.
Strategies that work:
1. Work with a French language coach who can adjust all the strategies for you, so that you use your time and money as productively as possible.
Hopefully, your coach is also willing to organize French immersions 1:1, where you can really advance with your language, with minimal frustration (if any).
2. Practice your listening and speaking in real conversation with real people. If you can hire a coach for this, the better, but do not delay speaking until you feel ready. The longer you wait, the less prepared you’ll feel to take the leap.
