Speaking French should be a simple thing – or so you may think, until you find yourself spending years and years without being able to communicate as well as you wanted.

There are two reasons for this:

1. You think that learning the words is the most important for speaking French, and you focus on vocabulary most of the time.

2. You are trying to express yourself in French the same way that you do in English: same speed, trying to use the same words, and expecting to feel yourself.

Why are these two points wrong?

Because most of the methods of teaching that you can find do focus on vocabulary and immersion, so how come they don’t work?

Why does J’Ouellette® Method work:

1. Vocabulary can be learned easily with a French-French dictionary. It is, in fact, the fastest and easiest way to enrich your vocabulary. You don’t need to hire someone to help you with that: any dictionary will do.

2. When we learn another language, we are putting on another persona. Don’t expect to speak in French with the same pace and patterns that you have in English. Listen and discover how is French changing your way of communication, and go with that. The speed will be much slower for a while. Is that wrong? It’s not for me, after more than 20 years of immersion in an anglophone country, so it shouldn’t be for you either.

The J’Ouellette® Method focuses on 2 things:

1. Pronunciation – really mastering the rules so that you never make a spelling or pronunciation mistake ever again.

2. Sentence structure – as I mentioned, you can lear words (nouns, verbs, etc.), but the art, in French, is how you put them together. French is very different from English: in English, the words are self sufficient (we use different words for different contexts), while in French, we can use the same words for different contexts, and they will change meaning just based on the way they are used.

So, yes, it pays dividends to choose the right method – you will save years of trial and error, and you’ll be able to express yourself in your own specific way.
