There are three rules and 6 tenses you should know – and it could feel like a big job.

Well, don’t worry about it, you only need to use the first rule at the beginning, and gradually learn the other two.

Rule #1

Condition in PRÉSENT, Consequence in FUTUR SIMPLE
« Si tu es gentil, tu auras un gâteau. »

ÊTRE (présent): je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont
AVOIR (futur simple): j’aurai, tu auras, il aura, nous aurons, vous aurez, ils auront

Rule #2

Condition in IMPARFAIT, Consequence in CONDITIONNEL PRÉSENT
« Si tu étais gentil, tu aurais un gâteau. »

ÊTRE (imparfait): j’étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient
AVOIR (conditionnel présent): j’aurais, tu aurais, il aurait, nous aurions, vous auriez, ils auraient

Rule #3

Condition in PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT, Consequence in CONDITIONNEL PASSÉ
« Si tu avais été gentil, tu aurais eu un gâteau. »

ÊTRE (plus-que-parfait): j’avais été, tu avais été, il avait été, nous avions été, vous aviez été, ils avaient été
AVOIR (conditionnel passé): j’aurais eu, tu aurais eu, il aurait eu, nous aurions eu, vous auriez eu, ils auraient eu
