6 Reasons you should be skeptical

1. A course purchased online could be just a set of recordings that you’ll have to manage on your own. These CDs, DVDs, MP3s and MP4s typically end in a pile of “I will get to them sometime”, because there is no accountability for you to keep going.

2. When you have time live with a French teacher, you may have to split it with other students, or the sessions may expire, so if you can’t finish them in a certain period of time, you lose the money you invested in them.

3. The program doesn’t teach all the rules of pronunciation, and you end up guessing the way to pronounce the French words, and end up learning them based on what they mean.

4. Your program limits you to a certain level, so if you want to go to the next one, you have to buy another program.

5. If you want to go to the next level, you have to change the teacher, find another program, or look for other websites and resources that offer what you want.

6. The lessons are boring or childish and don’t reflect the vocabulary or scenarios that you use in your life.

What you should look for in an online course

1. You should have a language coach who will be at your side all the way, and work with you during your downtimes, busy times and when the learning gets hard or things don’t make much sense.

2. The sessions should never expire. You should have 1:1 time with the language coach, and be able to book and cancel them with a 24-hour notice.

3. All the rules of pronunciation should be taught, so that you can read a menu in the restaurant without having to know all the words.

4. The program should take you from where you are and help you progress up to the level that you can, using the number of sessions that you purchased.

5. Your language coach should be able to help you progress to the highest level of the language, and be able to stay with you until you feel satisfied with your accomplishment. S/he should be your GO-to person to help you with your French, no matter how simple or advanced.

6. The French language coach adjusts the program to your personal interests, industry, the exact situations you are interested in or see yourself in. The program is flexible and custom made for YOU.
