How to Flirt in French
People say that flirting in French is very different than flirting in any other language. The words are different, the responses are different, the subtext of the feelings are different, too.
Emulating the French style of flirting and knowing what to say and how to say it in French will get you a long way. And, if you’re learning the language, the best practice is to get a boyfriend or girlfriend who speaks the language.
So, don’t sit back – a French partner won’t let you anyway – flirt with that special someone and let them know you’re game.
Need instructions?
No, you don’t.
Play by the ear, dance with it and have fun. Until you do it, you won’t be able to tell if you like it or not. You may find that you are perfectly cut for it and go with your gut.
If you still need some pointers, here are a few ideas that will guarantee that you have some fun, and that you won’t be misunderstood.
1.
Smile coyly. For the French, flirt is an art, and a smile says that you’re interested. So, if you’re not interested, be careful not to smile, and if you see someone smiling at you, look away. But if you are interested, feel free to initiate or reciprocate the flirting with the smile. Subtle smile. Don’t do the bright American smile, your you may be laughed at. Give the smile like Grinch, take it away, then give it back again. This is the first step and an important part of the art of seduction. Innocent seduction that is.
2.
Flatter the other person – a lot – especially if you are a man. The French pay excessive compliments, particularly when they are interested in someone. Sometimes they’re a little random, like « Vous avez les yeux très beaux », « Quel beau sourire », « Vous êtes très jolie », « Vous êtes très beau ». « Vous êtes très fort ».
Even if you know they’re just trying to seduce you, a little bit of flattery can go a long way.
3.
Touch arms and shoulders gently. Gently touch the other person’s arm or shoulder to let the person know you’re interested, if you’re already in conversation with him or her. When you laugh at something he said, touch his arm to make sure he’s paying attention. Also move subtly to draw attention to yourself.
4.
Kiss her. Not the airy bisous, but a kiss on the hand. Kisses are a great tool for seduction. If you kiss her on the lips, you may get yourself slapped, so stick with something that works.
5.
Maybe the most important thing to know is that the French flirt as often as Americans say “Hi, how are you?”. Not always will you be approached in a flirting manner by someone who has an agenda. While Americans flirt to get a girlfriend or a boyfriend, the French flirt for the art of flirting, for « la joie de vivre », to make a contact. So don’t be too ready to make sense of all the flirting going on around you in Paris – open up and dance the dance.
Want a tip?
The ultimate point of flirting is to win someone over. That means the men can be pushy and may not take no for an answer–they’re the ultimate seducers. Women, however, may look like they aren’t interested when they are.
