It’s easy to judge, but hard to try, and these humans who I love so much, not only did they try, but they are also exposing themselves with open heart.

Bonjour à tous ! I started Llyane’s J’Ouellette Extensif program in October 2019. I studied French in high school, years ago, and remember some vocabulary, but not much grammar, from that time. In 2017, I started traveling to France several times a year for my job. […] One of my favorite parts of the program is Llyane’s suggestion to write short stories in French, like the one here. My journey with the French language began in 2007. […] I made some very good friends in Angers, France who do not speak English, thus I wanted to improved my confidence in the language so that I could speak easily. I did not give up on my dream to be fully bilingual, but I continued to study on my own until I went online and found Llyane. She has been extremely patient with me and has tailored her coaching to suit my needs. I am currently at an intermediate advanced level, but with Llyane’s help, I will be writing and speaking at an advanced level in no time. I’m back with another short story. For part of my lessons with Llyane, I write little stories which we correct together. This week’s story was about my favorite confectionary in Paris, « À La mère de famille ». As I made a cake from their cookbook this weekend, it was the impetus for my story. Enjoy !

#10 MOMENTS ÉTRANGES D’UNE ANNÉE QUI N’ARRÊTE PAS DE NOUS SURPRENDRE
One of my favorite activities of the week is my French writing exercise. While I’m still a beginner, I love the challenge of trying out how to express my thoughts in French, and with Llyane’s expert coaching, how to correct and improve the expression both in writing and in speaking. Recently we had a strange weather week in Colorado, from the hottest day to snow literally overnight, and it made me think of the strangeness that has seemed to be a mode of life for many in this “unusual” year. I have a deep and abiding love for France, her history, people and food . My family is of French descent as is my husband’s so it is just natural that our travels take us to France. The places I write about are places that we have been, enjoyed and plan to return to. Some of our best vacations have been “stay-cations” . We rent a house, stay local in our activities, and do lots of cooking.

#13 NOTRE LUNE DE MIEL AU CAFÉ DE FLORE
Part of my ancestry is French – Lassegues and Cazajous from the Basque region in the Southwest.[…] Through Llyane’s network I have the joy of conversing in French with 5 different people in 4 different countries each week. My confidence in hearing and speaking French has improved dramatically these past seven months. Llyane helps me to break the barriers that have tripped me up for lo these many years, and stresses the rules of the French language so that I can self-correct myself. #15 LA CATHÉDRALE DE ST-PIERRE DE BEAUVAIS
Spending time in France meeting new people, learning about regional culture and history and connecting with French friends made when I studied at the university in Angers is definitely my « happy place ». For me, the lack of travel freedom has been difficult since the beginning of the pandemic. I knew I had to find a way to not feel separated from what I love so much. I’ve experimented with more French cooking, read more books in French and Llyane encouraged me to write short stories in French about our travels in France. I discovered that I love writing in French and it has become my way of traveling while staying at home during this time.

#16 APPRENDRE UNE LANGUE ÉTRANGÈRE EST-IL AMUSANT ?
I’ve been studying French for over 2 years and know first hand that it takes a considerable amount of effort, commitment, patience, and perseverance to see one’s progress. It can be tiring to speak another language, it’s easy to become discouraged as progress is often slow, it’s intimidating to speak with a native, and it’s not easy to accept our own mistakes! But I realized something fundamental that makes this process so worthwhile. I am having so much fun! My passion for learning gives me new energy, my confidence is growing, I am progressing at my own pace as I enjoy this journey.

Both France and her language are undoubtedly my passion. One of the best things about writing weekly stories for my French class with Llyane is that it gives me the chance to relive great times spent traveling in France. I thoroughly enjoy recounting our travels through these stories, sorting through photos of the trip and, of course, polishing my French grammar. I also enjoy improving my prononciation when I read the stories to Llyane. Being in control of all aspects of the language is definitely empowering! As you will see in the story, we really short-changed ourselves on time when we visited Nancy but we still saw some amazing sites and made wonderful memories.

I have been studying French with Llyane for over 2 1/2 years. I started as a true beginner, focusing on all aspects of learning a new language – grammar, reading, writing, oral comprehension, and speaking. With Llyane’s help I am now able to tackle intermediate texts and newspaper articles. My understanding of the spoken language is increasing as I try to listen to podcasts intended for my level. Writing has become a weekly habit of mine and an opportunity to expand my appreciation for french culture. I find myself using a dictionary to choose the most appropriate meaning rather than simply translating words. My goal is not only to speak the language but to enjoy the rich culture and the people who speak it. That’s what really makes it a fun learning journey for me.
